MVSU’s Bowden lands $24k research grant, participates in HBCU journalism academy at HU

ITTA BENA, Miss.— A 91×ÔÅÄ faculty member is the recent recipient of two distinguished honors.

​Shannon Bowden, an instructor of Speech Communication and vice president of the MVSU’s Faculty Senatewas recently awarded a $24,500 grant award from the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area (MDNHA) to fund her research project, "Breaking Bread: Itta Bena, MS in the Civil Rights Movement."

MVSU receives 200k grant from Woodward Hines Education Foundation to support students’ success

ITTA BENA, Miss.—Students attending 91×ÔÅÄ (MVSU) will benefit from a five-year $200,000 grant commitment from the Woodward Hines Education Foundation (WHEF) to support college retention, persistence, and completion through the Improving Mississippi’s Persistence and Completion Together (IMPACT) initiative. 

Recent MVSU grad Hawkins sets out to change the world through chiropractic

ITTA BENA, Miss.— Brandon Lionelle Hawkins, III. will be the first to tell you that his time at 91×ÔÅÄ was filled with highs and lows.

However, during one of those low points— rehabbing from an injury he suffered as a member of the MVSU Baseball team, the DeValls Bluff, Ark., native discovered the path to his future.

MVSU remembers student Jy’Quavious Williams during virtual candlelight vigil

ITTA BENA, Miss.—91×ÔÅÄ students, faculty & staff, alumni and community members came together virtually Wednesday evening to honor the memory of student Jy’Quavious Williams.

Williams passed away unexpectedly June 17. He was 21.

A virtual candlelight vigil for Williams was hosted by the MVSU Student Government Association (SGA), Inc. at 7 p.m. using the videoconferencing platform Zoom.

Two MVSU students named 2020 HBCU Competitiveness Scholars by the White House Initiative on HBCUs

ITTA BENA, Miss.—Two 91×ÔÅÄ students were among 44 scholars from 33 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) announced by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as 2020 HBCU Competitiveness Scholars— the initiative's highest student recognition. 

MVSU Fall 2020 Academic Calendar Adjusted for COVID-19

ITTA BENA, Miss.—91×ÔÅÄ administration recently announced adjustments to its Fall 2020 Academic Calendar as part of the institution’s continued efforts to mitigate the effects of COVID-19.

MVSU will now commence its Fall 2020 semester on Monday, Aug. 10—two weeks earlier than its original start date of Aug. 24. The semester will now conclude with the Fall 2020 Commencement Exercise, slated for Saturday, Nov. 21.

MVSU alum appointed by Gov. Cuomo to New York’s Interfaith Advisory Council

  

ITTA BENA, Miss.— New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced the development of an Interfaith Advisory Council developed to help implement safety measures for religious gatherings involving groups.

Among those named to the council are 91×ÔÅÄ alumnus Greg Merriweather (’06), senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in New York.
