91���� will celebrate Black History Month with its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Black History Convocation.

The theme for this year’s event is “Black Resistance,” which will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023, at the H.G. Carpenter Building in the Walter Roberts Auditorium.

The keynote speaker will be Mississippi Delta native Ty Pinkins, a veteran, lawyer, author, and former Communications Aide to the President of the United States.

Heidi Hankins, a senior sociology major from Charleston, Miss., at 91����, has been awarded the Gilman Scholarship and will study abroad in Florence, Italy, during the Spring 2023 semester.

ITTA BENA — With the holiday season in full swing, 91���� Athletic Director Hakim McClellan is preparing for the 2023 season by naming Kendrick Wade as the school's 18th football coach.

Janani Kunrathur Pasupathy, of Chennai, India, and Jasmine Wallace, of Greenwood, have been given research opportunities that opened the door for new research interests and networking options through the 91���� Bioinformatic graduate program.

ITTA BENA — 91���� graduates received encouraging words on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, from Anthony “Tony” Mitchell, who shared with students four life lessons to help correct them for where they are going.

Nearly 130 graduates participated in the Fall 2022 exercises, including Mitchell, who explained to the audience that he never had the opportunity to participate in his commencement exercise.

Wayne Compton is an accomplished young man who, at 22 years old, has overcome severe loss but has persevered to make sure his "can do" is always greater than his "can't do."

When hearing Compton's story, several questions may arise. Questions like; "Can a person suffer from tragedy and triumph simultaneously? How does one ultimately triumph after tragedy? Can tragedy lead to triumph?"
